This series has grown from my longtime fascination with hands and gestures. I was born into a line of people who are born with certain deficiencies in their hands and feet, and in my case, I was not born completely functional. Consequently, I have been through many reconstructive surgeries on all four of my limbs. Each surgery made me more self-aware of the appearance of my hands and the ways in which they function for me. I started to realize how much of who I am can come through such a small portion of my body. It was this experience that has caused me to become extra observant of others' in this way.
I have chosen to highlight the display of gesture while obscuring the face. I instructed my subjects to consciously explore the ways in which they use their limbs to express themselves, and in turn communicate something about themselves without facial expression. I captured the moments of touch, movement, and connection from within the subject's personal space.
